For Immediate Release:

QUEENS VILLAGE, NY (November 2, 2009) – GrayGlass, a full service glass fabricator, glass distributor and glass importer serving industrial, architectural, lighting and optical customers worldwide, supported the New York City High Line, by supplying east side and west side guardrails and infills for the project

“The High Line project is one of the greatest historic sites in New York City,” stated Chris Viggiano, President of GrayGlass.  “The project offered us the opportunity to help preserve a landmark and to work with some of the best talent to maintain a highly visible structure,” he further stated.

The New York City High Line expands approximately 1.45-mile (2.33 km) of New York City park built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad of the West Side Line, along the lower west side of Manhattan. The glass and systems included: glass balustrade, which was made up of 700- to 800-pound lites of 1 1/16-inch custom laminated glass, secured in a 5-inch-to-6-inch shoe with an architect-specified epoxy.

Other players working alongside GrayGlass on the project included Architect, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, New York City; general contractor, Kiska Construction, Long Island City, N.Y.; glazing contractor, Allied Glass Co., Freeport, N.Y.; installation subcontractor, Jerome Aluminum Products Corp., Westbury, N.Y.; custom shoe, Custom Steel Contractors Inc., South Kearny, N.J.; vacuum cup lifter supplier, Arlington Equipment, Queensbury, N.Y.

Built in the 1930s the High Line was a part of a large public-private project known as the West Side Improvement.  Freight trains were lifted approximately 30 feet in the air removing any dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan’s industrial district.  The trains ceased running on the High Line in 1980.  When the High Line faced the threat of demolition, a partnership was formed with the City of New York to preserve the structure and create an elevated public park.
